![]() There is something quietly civilizing about sharing a meal with other people. The simple act of making someone something to eat, even a bowl of soup or a loaf of bread, has a many-layered meaning. It suggests an act of protection and caring, of generosity and intimacy. It is in itself a sign of respect. Nigel Slater describes himself as "a cook who writes". For all intents and purposes, I am a writer who cooks. I do not chef; I cook. I bake. I boil. I mix and fold and ice. I do it because I love to, because it relaxes me, because I cannot imagine not doing it. Cooking, like writing, is not something I want to do. It is something I have to do. ![]() layout by ![]() |
